The following states require some type of no-fault auto insurance coverage: Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Dakota, Utah, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The reason for no-fault auto insurance coverage is to provide immediate help to drivers and passengers of auto accidents, regardless of who is at fault. Deciding who is to blame and who will pay the cost of accidents can sometimes run months or even years. The theory was to allow immediate settlement of auto insurance claims without delay. The laws regarding no-fault auto insurance were enacted also to help lower auto insurance rates by decreasing attorney costs from lengthy periods of litigation.
